Title: Cold Lonely Courage
Cold Lonely Courage is a fictional historical thriller set in France during World War II. It is inspired by the true story of a Belgian woman who saved many Jews from the Nazis. The writing is so believable that it made me feel that Madelene Toche, the novel’s protagonist, was a real person. We were all in need of such a successful, courageous and dedicated political assassin during that bleak period of our history.
Madelene’s fatally wounded twin brother died in her arms after a German Blitzkrieg attack. She tried to lead a normal life after his death, helping her parents run their restaurant. However, while on an errand, she was brutally raped by an S.S. Stormtrooper. Instead of letting these events turn her into a morose person, she found the courage to fight back. She became a British Special Operation political assassin - whose targets are S.S. commanders only.
Cold Lonely Courage is precisely what this book is about. Madelene, as a successful assassin, has the cold heart to kill with no remorse, a lonely life to lead, and tons of courage to continue on knowing she could be killed anytime. Besides reading about how incredibly skillful and thrilling her exploits are, there are many other subplots that made this novel impossible to put down.
I feel a sense of satisfaction that author Soren made Madelene such a success in her missions of revenge, because I feel it makes up for all the horrific events caused by the Nazis. An especially heart-wrenching case was the Oradour sur Glane massacre where an entire village was burnt and all inhabitants killed. It hurts to read about this, especially because it actually happened in real life. Through Soren’s extraordinarily skillful writing, he manages to drill into us why we should never let this brutal period of our history be ever repeated again. This is a must read. I recommend this to everyone because you will be blessed by it. Yuke Man, Reviewer
